A looking exercise for Channel Lake readers

Follow the light
across the water.

A familiar lake can look entirely different when a storm darkens the sky. In this acrylic painting by Antioch artist Joe Martin, try finding the brightest mark before you identify the subject.

Forked white lightning above a red and purple sunset sea, with a wooden boat, driftwood and stones on a sandy shore, surrounded by a white frame.

From the Chain O’Lakes to the canvas

Bring a local observation to a different shore.

Lake County’s lake study describes how Channel Lake connects with Lake Catherine. If you know these waters, recall a moment when the sky changed how the surface looked. Compare that memory with Joe’s painted shore. The collection identifies the scene by its subject; it does not identify Channel Lake as the place depicted.

Would you hang it where the light changes?

Look at the wall in morning and evening light and note how far away you normally stand. A screen can help you choose a subject, but it cannot establish the exact color or scale of the original. If you speak with Joe, give him the artwork link and ask about the dimensions, finish, official title and current availability.
